Montenegro’s Ambitious Renewable Energy Goals Spotlighted at Energy Week 2024

At Energy Week Western Balkans 2024, Montenegro’s commitment to renewable energy took centre stage. Milutin Đukanović, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elektroprivreda Crne Gore (EPCG), presented the country’s ambitious roadmap focused on expanding its renewable capacity, particularly in hydropower and solar integration. Montenegro’s energy strategy highlights a commitment to localised production, aiming to build renewable energy sources where consumption occurs, thereby reducing dependency on external energy sources.

Montenegro’s efforts align with the country’s decarbonisation goals, part of a broader regional push towards a green energy future. Đukanović outlined plans to deploy battery storage solutions and maximise the use of hydropower infrastructure to enhance energy efficiency. Montenegro’s government sees these steps as crucial in positioning the country as a regional leader in renewable energy and achieving long-term energy security in line with EU sustainability goals.

As a host of Energy Week Western Balkans, Montenegro is also fostering collaboration with other Western Balkan nations to create a unified approach to green energy. With a supportive policy framework and partnerships with companies like UGT Renewables and Hyundai Engineering Co., Montenegro is well-poised to become a renewable energy hub. The country’s strategy offers a replicable model for others in the region working toward energy independence and climate resilience.
